Description
Picture really doesn't do justice to the original... it's on a canvas over 3 feet long, plus there's a 3D element to it with the wax dripping up the bottom right.
Painted on what I consider my haunted canvas... salvaged from a dumpster, passed between many owners and neglected for years... while in my possion during a particularly dark and lonely period of my life living in a basement during a long winter in a haunted house, I covered up the previous painting with thick white paint letting it dry in waves. From then, whenever I was feeling overwhelmed by a certain emptiness, I would go to the canvas to paint blackness in random patches. Experiment absentmindendly... escaping. Letting go.
It sat untouched and hidden for over a year until I took it out of my closet the other night. I sat and stared at it for a long time before I saw the moon and began, staying up all night to work on it.
The moon is tied in with darkness, self -deception, and misery.... but it's something I find incredibly beautiful and empowering. The perfect thing to both cover up and deconstruct into the blackened spirit I'd originally put upon the canvas.
Art comforts the disturbed and helps us to let go. I've finally released that blackness from my soul and manifested it into something haunting and beautiful.
